I (Anna) have been wanting to host a retreat at the location for a very long time and am so happy to be co hosting with Suzie Briddsang and Colleen Troy.

Mabel Dodge Luhan House | Taos, NM

The Experience: Taos, NM, lovingly nicknamed “a bohemian mecca,” and the Mabel Dodge Luhan Historic House, known for over a century as an artists hub, is the setting for this Creative Retreat. Oh if these thick, warm adobe walls could talk; what might we hear?

Our group-exclusive time here centers on abundant conversations and sharing while the pinon fireplaces envelope us in snugness. We’ll be fed phenomenal homemade meals each day from their historic kitchen.

Workshops:

I am planning on dyeing yarns inspired by the Southwest and bringing pattern ideas so whoever wants to can create a knitted, or fiber piece of choice, inspired by our surroundings.

Suzie is offering a workshop on making patterns work for you, by using an existing pattern you like and altering it,  OR creating a new pattern from elements you you’ve seen and like.

Suzie will also lead us through a series of daily, explorative sessions called “Conversations about Creativity.” These group sessions invite makers of all kinds to immerse themselves in the topic of creativity – its definition, role in our lives and why we are drawn to an ongoing relationship with it. Participants will engage in discussion, reflection, writing, lecture, interactive activities and share a great deal of laughter. Each person is encouraged to investigate the experiences, values and intentions they hold regarding their creative work. This new knowledge can serve as a powerful ally. Participants leave feeling renewed and empowered.

Helpful Information about this Location

There is no luggage portaging available and no elevators on the property.  Some guest rooms are in the Big House, others in the Juniper House or cottage. There is a gravel parking lot and there are stairs leading to the flagstone courtyard and Big House where the receptionist is located. It is possible to drive to the gated entrance to drop off luggage. (The receptionist can provide instructions but we ask that you please refrain from driving through the gate onto the fragile flagstone courtyard.)

In keeping with the feel of Mabel’s era, there are no telephones, televisions, internet or alarm clocks in the guest rooms. Telephone and internet access are available in the common area of the Big House.

Taos is at an altitude of approximately 7,000 feet above sea level. You will need to drink plenty of water during your stay to prevent dehydration and alleviate altitude sickness. Do bring a refillable water bottle that can be filled.

It is 15 minute walk to historic Taos Plaza. The streets and property can be dark at night. Flashlights are available in your room and from the receptionist as needed.

While alcohol is allowed, this property does not have a bar/lounge which means BYOB. There are plenty of nearby grocery stores to purchase alcohol and snack items.

There are yoga mats and props available for use in the yoga room.

For the safety of guests and staff, fireplaces cannot be used in the guest rooms, however in the lounge and gathering areas, the staff will monitor all fires to keep us cozy.

Gratuity will be collected, suggested range is typically $10-$15 per person/per day and will be shared amongst the MDL staff, mostly to kitchen and housekeeping. (The suggested range for gratuity is specified from the MDL Director and Asst. director. The staff is readily available to help with any needs that arise while on the property.
